Lake Kerkini: A Greek Wonderland

The Mammal List

Apart from humanity the most obvious mammals around the lake are are the cattle, sheep, goats and buffaloe. The buffaloe are by far the most interesting of these although there numbers have made them an ecological problem in the last few years. Of the native mammals mice and hedgehogs are the most commonly seen, and unfortunately most of the hedgehogs are road casualities. Generally speaking the best way to see mammals is to drive around at night, or to walk in the mountains. The list below is short a few species we know, but time and equipment have been lacking for proper surveys. There are plenty of bats around but we have no 100% sure identifications. We know Pippistrelles are here from a caught specimen, but I couldn't decide which of the two species it was. We would love somebody who knows there bats to come and visit for a little.
